We are looking for a Governance Support Officer to join our team in Governance and Civic Office. The successful person will share our values, commitment, and motivation to make a difference for our residents, clients, and communities.

About the role

The Governance Support Officers are responsible for a range of administrative support for the committees and members of the Council. The role involves the planning, organisation and attendance at Committees and other meetings to provide a comprehensive committee service which may include occasional evening and weekend work.

This role is normally based at our modern and conveniently located office accommodation, where the formal committee meetings are held however there are opportunities to work from home when the committee schedule allows.

About you

You will need:

  • Relevant qualification at NVQ3 and relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of Council structure and functions, Council constitutions and decision-making processes at both member and officer level.
  • Good understanding of the Council’s policies and procedures in respect of political management, standing orders, rules of procedure and local conventions/protocols.
  • Understanding of current good practice in member support and development.
  • General understanding of the electoral process.
  • Experience in Local Government committee administration and/or policy role involving regular contact with Members and senior Officers.
  • Some project management experience.
  • To be organised, accurate and able to work under pressure to pre-determined deadlines.
  • To be confident and tactful in dealing with elected members and senior officers and be able to think logically and plan ahead.
  • An excellent standard of written English is a must, as is the ability to write with clarity and precision.
  • Minute-taking experience is essential and you should be competent using Microsoft Office.
  • To be able to prioritise your own work to meet deadlines and Member’s and Officer’s expectations.
  • To have the ability to understand complex documents and discussions and be able to extract and summarise the key points.
  • To be a committed team player and work flexibly.
