What we are looking for

We are looking for a Grounds Maintenance Operative to join our team in Public Realm.

The successful person will share our values, commitment, and motivation to make a difference for our residents, clients, and communities.

About the role

The Public Realm Team are responsible for the day to day management of the District Councils’ countryside sites and open spaces. These include informal recreational sites, local nature reserves, parks and smaller picnic areas. In addition, the Team is responsible for Council owned play areas, management of the Councils’ tree stock, routine grounds maintenance on roadside verges and open space within Council housing areas and keeping the Districts clean through litter collection and removing fly tips.

We are looking to recruit a hard-working individual to join our busy Grounds Maintenance team. The team operates throughout the Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council areas. A full clean current driving licence is required as a minimum and experience of Grounds Maintenance work and equipment is essential. You must be physically fit and able to work in all weather conditions. Some weekend work may be required.

This role is for 40 hours per week spread over 5 working days; we operate an annualised hours system.

About you

You will need:

  • NVQ level 2 in Amenity or National Certificate in Amenity Horticulture or equivalent experience
  • Experience in using knapsack spray. National Proficiency Test Certificate PA1 and PA6.
  • National Proficiency Test Certificate in basic chainsaw maintenance and use CS30 and CS31.
  • Full clean driving licence Class C1 + E (ability to tow a trailer)
  • Proven ability in the use of a range of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment
  • Experience in driving and using a tractor with a wide range of tractor mounted turf equipment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance of winter and summer games playing fields.
  • Experience of driving ride on grass cutting machinery.
  • Experience of driving whilst towing a trailer.
  • Experience in carrying physically demanding manual work in all weather conditions, for example, tree works, moving equipment on and off trailers, emptying dog and litter bins, lifting equipment.
  • Basic IT skills required for mobile working/recording purposes.
  • Ability to make day-to-day decisions about own workload.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to complete work sheets and other necessary documentation.
