Unpaid volunteering positions

Lowestoft has two Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) schemes in place to help stimulate the economic revival of the area. One of our key aims is to repair and reinstate historic buildings and shopfronts and other architectural features in Lowestoft, to recreate traditional historic designs and appearance.

This role will require the volunteers to visit Suffolk Records Offices to search the county archives for historic images, plans and advertisements of key properties within the Lowestoft High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) and collate a digital catalogue of images to be made available for East Suffolk Council officers. The volunteers will also be required to curate a small exhibition displaying photographs and captions of key areas of the High Street HAZ. The volunteers will have the freedom to choose a theme for the exhibition and produce the display.

We are looking for volunteers that can commit approximately one day per week for a period of 3 months. However, we are happy to consider other working patterns that may be more convenient for individuals. You must be able to travel to the Suffolk Records offices in Lowestoft and Ipswich, be computer literate and have good written and verbal communication skills.

In return, you will play a key role in assisting with the preservation and sharing of Lowestoft’s heritage, receive training from Archivists at Suffolk Records Office, and have the opportunity to curate an exhibition. Volunteers will also be reimbursed for travel and reasonable lunch expenses.

For full details of the project, please see the role specification that can be found to the right-hand side of this advert.

If you are interested in discussing this volunteer opportunity further, please email Rebecca Styles, High Street HAZ Project Officer (

In order to apply, please email, providing a covering letter outlining your interest, relevant skills and experience to the project, as well as what you hope to gain from this opportunity. To support your application, please include contact details for two referees.
