Fancy a new challenge? This is an exciting and progressive time for Ipswich Borough Council.

The council is looking to recruit two planning officers to work in our Planning Policy and Development Management teams.

Ipswich is a dynamic county town and is one of the fastest growing regional centres in England, thousands of homes and jobs are planned for the area together with the continued strong regeneration focus for the historic town centre and Waterfront. Ipswich is the largest centre in Suffolk for business, culture, entertainment and sports and is a university town with a rich history and heritage as well as a thriving Waterfront.

The planning policy role primarily involves the preparation of evidence-based studies and supporting the final stages of the new Local Plan due to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in early 2020. There is also the opportunity to work with neighbouring local authorities and the county council on strategic planning matters. This role is also responsible for collecting data, providing analysis and preparing monitoring reports including retail occupancy, employment land availability and the annual authority monitoring report.

The development management role is a key position in our team making recommendations for the determination of a wide variety of planning applications listed building consents, responding to preapp enquiries and general correspondence. Appearing at Planning and Development Committee and Design and Conservation Panel are a few of the wide range of requirements in this busy team.

Both posts offer excellent opportunities to gain experience in the field of planning, to further your career. The role will afford the opportunity to work closely across both planning policy and development management, including our major projects team.

You will need to be enthusiastic, motivated and qualified as a town planner (or working towards membership of the RTPI) with a degree or NVQ level 6 in a planning related professional / technical field. Preferably you will have experience in a similar role, or you may be a new graduate. Ideally, you would be a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (or eligible for Membership).

This post offers a range of benefits including:

  • Green Travel Plan offering reduced public transport tickets including 60% discount on train season tickets for travel to work
  • Flexible working hours
  • Agile working - so you are not tied wholly to daily office working
  • Payment of annual RTPI membership subscriptions
  • Relocation policy
  • Childcare subsidy
  • Use of our fleet of electric pool cars and pool bikes for business use around the Borough.

The Planning and Development team is based at the council's HQ in Grafton House, which is just a short walk from the railway station, town centre and the Waterfront.

Come and join us and fulfill your ambitions at Ipswich Borough Council.
