Fixed term for 4 years, 4 days per week. 

You will be based mainly in Lowestoft but will be required to travel countywide across Suffolk.

We are seeking to recruit a Travel Trainer to work on a 1:1 basis with students / clients with special educational needs (SEN), physical disabilities and learning difficulties.

You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport and trust with both the student / client and their parent / guardian. 

Utilising your knowledge of SEN and / or learning disabilities you will develop and deliver tailored individualised journey planning, as well as road and personal safety training on public transport. Your training and support will enhance the clients social and life skills, building their confidence so they are able to undertake these journeys independently. You are also responsible for generating your own referrals.

You will have good organisational, listening and time management skills along with the ability to use initiative and work independently. You will need to undertake an element of administration and computer-based work associated with maintaining daily training records, risk assessments and reports along with the communication skills to provide positive constructive feedback and the ability to promote the team.

In this role you would be expected to have some early starts / late finishes as well as working during school holidays. You will be responsible for managing your own diary so will be highly organised and able to prioritise.

You will have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Experience working within a special educational needs (SEN) / adult social care setting
  • Good standard of general education (5 GCSEs A - C including English and mathematics or equivalent)
  • IT literate and knowledge of IT / Microsoft systems
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to instil confidence and build rapport with a diverse group of partners and people
  • Ability to organise and prioritise with excellent time management skills
  • Knowledge of training / transport issues (desirable)
  • Education and Training Level 3 (desirable).

The role requires you to be mobile throughout a wider operational area including travelling around the county of Essex and beyond, transporting service users and their belongings and to be able to do so in an emergency. Driving licence and car or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means is essential.
